主講人簡(jiǎn)介

John Ball教授現(xiàn)任職于Heriot-Watt大學(xué)及愛(ài)丁堡Maxwell數(shù)學(xué)科學(xué)研究所,英國(guó)牛津大學(xué)榮譽(yù)教授。英國(guó)皇家學(xué)會(huì)會(huì)士、歐洲科學(xué)院院士、美國(guó)數(shù)學(xué)學(xué)會(huì)會(huì)士、愛(ài)丁堡皇家學(xué)會(huì)會(huì)士、法蘭西科學(xué)院外籍院士及挪威科學(xué)院外籍院士。其重要學(xué)術(shù)任職包括:2006年擔(dān)任菲爾茲獎(jiǎng)委員會(huì)主席,2003至2006年間出任國(guó)際數(shù)學(xué)聯(lián)盟主席,2007至2010年擔(dān)任國(guó)際數(shù)學(xué)聯(lián)盟執(zhí)行委員會(huì)委員,為首屆阿貝爾獎(jiǎng)評(píng)委會(huì)成員,曾領(lǐng)導(dǎo)愛(ài)丁堡數(shù)學(xué)學(xué)會(huì)及倫敦?cái)?shù)學(xué)學(xué)會(huì)。2006年,英國(guó)女王伊麗莎白二世授予其爵士勛銜。John Ball教授在變分法、偏微分方程、無(wú)限維動(dòng)力系統(tǒng)及其在非線(xiàn)性力學(xué)中的應(yīng)用、非線(xiàn)性彈性力學(xué)數(shù)學(xué)理論與液晶數(shù)學(xué)理論等領(lǐng)域作出開(kāi)創(chuàng)性貢獻(xiàn),發(fā)表學(xué)術(shù)論文百余篇,出版多部專(zhuān)著,現(xiàn)任多家國(guó)際權(quán)威學(xué)術(shù)期刊主編及編委。

Brief Introduction of Sir John Ball

John Ball is a Professor at Heriot-Watt University and the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Edinburgh, and an Emeritus Professor at the University of Oxford. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Academia Europaea and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, of which he was President from 2021-2025. He is also a foreign academician of the French Academy of Sciences and the Norwegian Academy of Science and a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. He served as Chair of the Fields Medal Committee (2006), President of the International Mathematical Union (2003-2006), Member of the Jury of the First Abel Prize Committee, and President of both the Edinburgh Mathematical Society and the London Mathematical Society. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006. He has made outstanding contributions in the fields of variational calculus, partial differential equations, infinite-dimensional dynamical systems and their applications in nonlinear mechanics, materials science and liquid crystals.
